Your DWS STUDIO website is built to be smart, many sections dynamically pull in content like testimonials, blog posts, or projects using what’s called a query.
While Bricks Builder gives you the power to fine-tune these queries, making changes without understanding the structure can break how content appears on your site.
So if you’re going to tweak a query, please read this first.
What’s a Query? #
A query is what tells your site what kind of content to show.
For example:
- A testimonial slider that only shows posts from the “homepage” category
- A case study grid that displays your three most recent projects
- A FAQ block that pulls in all published FAQs
It’s like giving your site a set of instructions for what to load, where.
When You Might Want to Change a Query #
Most queries are set up intentionally and don’t need to be changed. But there are cases where you might want to customize them:
- Only show specific testimonials on a particular sales page
- Limit a project grid to a certain category
- Pull in just a few FAQs for a section instead of the whole archive
This is where adjusting the “Include” filter can be helpful.
How to Safely Edit a Query #
⚠️ Warning: Editing queries on shared templates (like blog post templates) will change that section across every page that uses it. Only do this if you understand the impact.
Before editing:
- Never edit a query directly on a template unless you’re creating dynamic rules for different contexts.
- Back up the page by exporting it or duplicating the section to a test page.
To adjust a query: #
- Go to the page or template you want to edit
- Click Edit with Bricks
- Scroll to the section that’s pulling in dynamic content
- Click on the element (e.g., the grid or slider)
- In the left panel, scroll to the Query section
- Click the infinity icon (∞)
- Scroll down and look for the “Include” settings
- Pick specific posts you want to display
- Save and preview
- If it doesn’t look right, undo or revert to your backup.
Don’t Break the System #
If you’re unsure about whether a query is safe to change, or if the section is used sitewide (like in blog templates or archive loops), refer to your handoff document for guidance on what’s been built to be dynamic and reusable.
