Essential Small Business Website Pages: Do You Have Them All?

Article Outline

Yes, each website should look and feel different, but there are a few essential pages that every customer expects to find when they land on your site—and for good reason. Having standardized pages removes mental load because it’s what people are familiar with. If your website doesn’t address key buyer questions, it may not be serving your business as well as it could.

For my clients, I always recommend starting with a basic 5-page site. These five are essential website pages for any business, whether you’re small or mid-sized:

5 Essential Website Pages

1. Home Page

Your homepage is the first impression of your business. It should address these key points:

  • What your business offers.
  • How your products or services solve customer pain points.
  • Clear calls to action (CTAs) to guide visitors on their next steps.

2. About Page

Now more than ever, in the age of AI, it’s crucial to humanize your brand. Your About Page helps build trust by connecting with your audience and telling your story. It’s also great for SEO if your founders or team members are frequently searched on Google.

  • Include personal details or photos of your team to avoid looking like a generic or spammy website.
  • If you’re in a customer-facing industry, this page can play a key role in building relationships with potential clients.

Here’s an example of a humanized about page:

3. Services Page

For service-based businesses (or a product page for e-commerce), a Services Page is a must. Break down your services clearly, addressing all potential customer concerns. Having an easily scannable page can keep visitors on your site and prevent them from looking for other service providers.

  • Address customer pain points and show how your services are the solution.
  • Offer a “roundup” of your services, but consider creating individual pages for each service if applicable.

For Example:

For a med spa, your services page should clearly list all the treatments you offer to address potential customer concerns. It’s important to have a roundup page with an overview of all services, but you can also create individual service pages to go into more detail.

For example:

  • Facial Treatments: Show a list of all your facial treatments, explaining the benefits of each and which skin concerns they address (e.g., anti-aging, acne treatment, hydration).
  • Body Treatments: Detail body contouring, cellulite reduction, and other body services with easy-to-scan information.
  • Injectables: Explain your Botox, fillers, and other injectable services while addressing common customer questions, such as downtime, pain level, and expected results.

Make sure your services page answers key pain points, such as:

  • What concerns does this med spa address?
  • Why choose this treatment over others?
  • How will this treatment help me achieve my goals?

If a customer can’t easily find the service they need or understand how it can benefit them, they may opt for another med spa that appears more aligned with their concerns.

4. Contact Page

People need an easy way to reach you! Include at least one main contact method, and offer a backup option (e.g., an email address if your contact form fails). If your goal is to streamline communication, encourage people to book a call instead of offering multiple methods that can slow your process.

5. Blog Page

A Blog Page is more than a space to dump ideas—it’s an opportunity to offer free resources and build trust. Blogs can boost your SEO, showcase your expertise, and act as a content hub that you can repurpose for social media or other marketing efforts.

Make sure your blog page is user-friendly and organized so visitors can easily find the information they’re looking for.

Functional Pages You Can’t Forget

These functional pages are a part of the essential website pages to ensure a positive user experience and keep your website running smoothly:

  1. 404 Page (Page Not Found):
    • Don’t let a broken link frustrate visitors. A well-designed 404 page can redirect users to useful content or offer a search bar to keep them engaged.
    • Add some playful copy or an Easter egg to lessen the frustration.
  2. Privacy Policy:
    • Essential for Canadian and U.S. businesses to comply with legal requirements. It should be easily accessible, typically in your footer.
  3. Terms of Service:
    • Protects your business and explains the rules visitors must agree to when using your website.
  4. Disclaimers:
    • Important for businesses offering advice, health-related services, or financial guidance. It protects you legally and sets clear expectations.
  5. Sitemap:
    • Helps search engines crawl and index your website, improving SEO.

Additional Pages to Consider

Depending on your business, these additional pages can enhance the customer experience:

  1. Testimonials or Reviews:
    • Build credibility and trust by showcasing customer feedback. You can display a large wall of testimonials or highlight specific aspects of your product/service with shorter reviews.
  2. FAQ Page:
    • If you find yourself answering the same questions repeatedly, a FAQ page can save you time and give customers instant answers.
  3. Search Results Page:
    • If you have a search feature, ensure there’s a well-designed page for displaying search results.
  4. Landing Pages:
    • Create specific landing pages for ads, promotions, or seasonal offers. They help with targeting and conversion.
  5. Products Page:
    • Even if you’re a service provider, offering low-cost digital products or resources is a great way to build trust and upsell services.
